Strategic dressing for plus size women – 7 tips

Department stores are missing the boat – and designers, too. As an image consultant, I have plenty of size 16s and 18s and I sometimes have to take my executive female clients to Washington, DC to shop. All I find in my local stores (in SE Virginia) are dreadful Daddy Jackets that are too long and too shapeless. And when a blazer jacket happens to fit your upper body, the pants are usually too billowy.

The winner of the Miss British Beauty Curve 2013 competition has an important message about body image, which she's determined to share with women around the world.

Elena Raouna, 22, was crowned the winner of the British pageant for plus-size young women after entering the competition on Facebook. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Raouna stressed that "you don't have to be size zero to be a model, and you can be pretty and plus size at the same time."

With the tag line, “Not all fat girls want to be skinny,” the show “Big Sexy” tries to distance itself from other model-based reality shows like “America’s Next Top Model,” and “Project Runway.”

On Aug. 30, the network TLC premiered the new program that centers around the lives of five full-figured women struggling to break into New York’s fashion industry. The show does not place the models in made-for-television competition, but instead hones in on the issue of plus-size models trying to make it big.

How to Become a Plus-Sized Model

Create Your Portfolio When you're first breaking into the industry, you won’t need a full portfolio to begin making inquiries. Instead, concentrate on photographs that show your natural beauty and that aren’t particularly staged or posed. Aim for at least one high-quality face shot and a full-body shot in simple, flattering attire.

Note: If you have poor-quality photographs, it's advised to arrive at the agency without photographs. If you are a beginning model and show potential, many agencies will understand.

Are You The Next PLUS Model Magazine Spotlight Model?

Now we think it’s your time to shine. We are looking for our next Spotlight Model to introduce to the plus industry and our readers.
